Central Plant Expansion
Meredith College
Raleigh, NC
This project involved the renovation and expansion of the central mechanical plant which supports the Meredith College campus. A new building was added onto the existing plant to facilitate the installation of a new chiller, cooling tower, boiler and oil storage/pumping system. The existing chilled water system was reworked to include a new 600 ton chiller/cooling tower. This revamped the system to provide 1,200 tons of total cooling and is piped to allow for the addition of two future chillers. Initially, the design called for renovation of the existing steam boilers, however just prior to construction a boiler was lost in a building fire. This dictated that a new 200 hp steam boiler be installed. A new above-grade 15,000 gallon oil storage and transfer facility was also constructed as part of this project. Despite the setbacks, changeover to the new facility was achieved in a timely fashion with almost no interruption to the college campus.
